So it appears that the few members of the AVSForum that have received the Sony firmware patch (or have newer sets with the firmware updated apparently already updated) are reporting it is simply masking the problem, darkening the back light on blank inputs so as to make it seem less severe. This even occurs in dark scenes in movies/shows/games which is effectively making the picture quality suffer.
More info as we get it...

I downloaded the patch that was linked to on the AVS Forum and installed it and the few clouds I could see are gone! The patch works fantastic for me!
The patch does successfully remove clouds on blank inputs. No doubt about that. But it looks as though it only works on blank inputs...clouds are still visible in regular viewing.
In the end, this remains a hardware problem that software simply isn't going to fix. Still, hopefully your clouds are really gone.

I am in the process of purchasing a Sony Bravia 40X200A. Is this the same tv as the XBR's. Has it got clouding problems?

You guys are a bunch of anal idiots. CRT's had phosphor mask that was less than perfect regarding uniformity and it would prevail on dark or no input conditions; plasma has phosphor washing after hours of use; these LCDs have a touch of cloudiness viewable when there's black screens ~ but if you're focusing on looking for imperfection ~ nothing will ever satisfy. Get real ~ get on it ~ enjoy the active picture or get a pill for your problem...
